Well, the actual definition of procastination is the action of delaying or postponing your work which needs to be done within a certain deadline. But for me it is just a habit of doing something 'trivial' in place of your task which is more important and needs to be done within a certain time. Everyone does this. You may feel better to know that you're not alone,it can be dispiriting to know that how much it can hold back your potential.
Why it happens?
Suppose you have been given a task which you have to complete within two weeks. The logical part of your brain which makes the rational decisions tells you to start the work according to a proper schedule. But the emotional side of your brain has built this habit of procastination. There is a constant battle going on in between those two. And there is a great chance that you will act impulsively and choose the emotional side because you'll get instant release of dopamine which is not the case when you choose the rational side. It is not the question whether it is intentional or habitual, the thing is instead of doing the work you are doing something inconsequential which gives you instant gratification .You're wasting your time on silly things like youtube ,whatsapp etc and the deadline is getting closer. As the deadline is getting closer and closer you start overthinking and panicking. To escape from the panic and guilt of not doing the work, you are more postponing the work. This will continue till the moment you realize that there is no way to escape from this huge workload which at the begining was a very simple task. And this thing happens again and again. This is not a problem you just can get away with. People can get stress, anxiety, fatigue and sometimes even depression.Your confidence can go down, you can loose self esteem which can make you believe you are inferior.
Practical ways to get rid of this habit
This is the method which I have used and I am getting results. I have improved a lot but still there's a long way to go. You have to be consistent to get rid of this habit.
It takes your dedicated effort and time to achieve anything. There is no way you can kill the habit of procastination within a day. Don't make commitments like I must finish this work within one hour if it is practically impossible to do so. You'll only get disappointment. Think of a good strategic plan and execute it accordingly.
Look,it's your life. You and solely you're responsible for every decision and each call you make. Ask yourself . Do you have ambitions in your life? I know you do have goals, that's why you want to get rid of this problem. And that is the biggest motivation you'll get within yourself to achieve something. I meant to say that you don't need to find motivation outside which is temporary. Make your "someday " today and keep working on your goals.Remember that consistently working hard may not provide you happiness but it'll undoubtedly lead you to something which gives satisfaction which is more important than happiness.

- Prioritize
It will be helpful to make a list of your goals and then break it into monthly, weekly and daily tasks. We only have twenty four hours in a day and loads of task needs to be done. But not all task are equally important and doesn't really need to be done right away. That's why it is important to rank your task according to your priority and execute it accordingly to get better productivity with good time management.
You can get hundred articles on internet on how to make a priority list.
- Divide the task
You will find that the task which seems to be imposible at first is now achievable when you break it down into smaller chunks. It's always easier to take small steps on stairs rather than jumping from bottom to get on the top.
- Be realistic
It takes your dedicated effort and time to achieve anything. There is no way you can kill the habit of procastination within a day. It's really very useful, especially for students.
